Detailed description

The Calibre 4162 movement is a significant technological leap introduced by Rolex at Watches & Wonders 2026, replacing the predecessor 4161 in the Yacht-Master II collection. As Rolex’s most complex movement to date, it is purpose-built for regatta racing with revolutionary changes in its operational logic.

Below is a detailed analysis of the features and technical improvements of the 4162:

1. Revised Programming Mechanism

The most significant departure from the Calibre 4161 is the removal of the Ring Command system (where the bezel was rotated to lock/unlock the programming function).

  • Push-button Operation: Programming the countdown duration (from 1 to 10 minutes) is now handled entirely via the bottom pusher (at 4 o’clock). Each press advances the countdown minute hand by one increment.

  • User Experience: Eliminating bezel interaction makes the operation more intuitive, faster, and reduces the risk of error in the harsh, high-pressure environments of actual racing.

2. Counter-clockwise Countdown

A highly intuitive design improvement in the 4162:

  • Both the countdown minute hand and the central seconds hand now rotate counter-clockwise when the regatta timer is activated.

  • This allows sailors to visually track the time remaining as it naturally “counts down” toward zero, rather than having to calculate position on a clockwise scale.

3. Mechanical Memory

The 4162 maintains the “mechanical memory” capability. If you set a 5-minute countdown, once the sequence is finished and reset, the hand automatically returns to the 5-minute marker, ready for the next start without manual reconfiguration.

4. Instant Synchronization (Fly-back & On-the-fly)

During a race start sequence, if the official race signal sounds and your watch is slightly off, pressing the reset button allows the seconds hand to fly back or advance instantly to the nearest minute to synchronize with the official clock without stopping the movement.
